The Myth of Heracles on Ancient Coins
The Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, among the largest collections of its kind worldwide,
draws inspiration from the life of the mythical hero Heracles and his various depictions on the
coins of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection. For the workshop, they have been selected coins
of cities and rulers, which very characteristically “bring to life” the multidimensional myth of the
hero and his exploits. Through the chosen coins, the participants will have the unique experience
to become familiar with the aspects of Heracles life, labors and achievements by:
- observing the printed illustrated explanatory material
- exploring, through a magnetic map and card-coins, the geographical range of the issues that
- used the figure of Heracles as a principal iconographic type
- playing interactive games with enlarged card-coins
- getting in touch with exact ancient coin replicas
- creating their own coins out of plasticine using clay moulds, following the ancient
